What to Do Between Sauna Sessions
The pauses between sauna rounds are just as important as the heat itself. This cooling and resting phase allows your body to stabilise temperature, restore circulation, and prepare for the next cycle. Without it, the benefits of sauna bathing are incomplete.
1. Cooling the Body
After each session, step out slowly and let your body breathe cool air for one or two minutes. Then take a cold shower or plunge. This causes your blood vessels—dilated by heat—to contract again, improving elasticity and circulation. The contrast boosts your immune system and gives an invigorating sense of clarity.
2. Rehydration
Sauna sessions can cause the body to lose up to half a litre of fluid through sweat. Replace this with cool water or herbal tea. Avoid alcohol or sugary drinks, which dehydrate further. Proper hydration maintains blood pressure and helps flush out toxins.
3. Rest and Reflection
Lie down or sit quietly in the relaxation zone for at least 10–15 minutes between rounds. Deep breathing helps oxygenate your blood and deepen relaxation. Many sauna enthusiasts describe this as the most meditative part of the ritual—the stillness after the heat.
Alternating heat, cold, and rest is the essence of true sauna culture. Each cycle trains the heart, strengthens immunity, and leaves you feeling lighter and clearer with every breath.
At Emerald Spa, our group sauna events are always very social, with the opportunity to meet other like-minded people from all over the world. We sit in the lounge, terraces, garden, pool or around the table eating food and chatting with each other like a community. That, in itself, is worth experiencing.
