How to Prepare Your Body Before the Sauna

Preparation determines how beneficial and comfortable your sauna experience will be. Entering the heat without proper hydration, rest, or hygiene can place unnecessary strain on your body. A few simple steps before your session make a significant difference in both safety and effectiveness.

Hydrate Well

Drink one or two glasses of water about 30 minutes before entering the sauna. Hydration supports circulation and helps regulate body temperature. Avoid coffee, alcohol, or energy drinks, which can increase dehydration. You should not enter the sauna if you are drunk or under the influence of intoxicating substances, as can endanger your health.

Shower First

A brief shower removes oils, perfumes, and lotions that can block pores and prevent sweating. It also improves hygiene for everyone sharing the space. Dry your body before entering to allow heat to absorb evenly through your skin.

Eat Lightly

Sauna sessions immediately after a heavy meal can cause discomfort or dizziness. A light snack or small meal one to two hours beforehand gives your body enough energy without overloading the digestive system.

Remove Jewellery and Makeup

Metal accessories can heat up and cause burns, while cosmetics clog pores and mix with sweat. Entering clean and natural ensures the heat can work freely on your skin.

Preparation is more than routine—it’s part of the ritual. It signals to your body and mind that it’s time to release tension and reset. At Emerald Spa, we recommend beginning every session mindfully, with calm breath and clear intention.
