How to Cool Down After the Sauna
Proper cooling is a vital part of the sauna cycle. The sudden contrast between hot and cold stimulates circulation, strengthens blood vessels, and boosts your immune system. The process should be gradual and mindful, not rushed.
1. Step into Cool Air
When leaving the sauna, stay outside or in a cooler area for one to two minutes at least. Allow your body to release excess heat naturally before exposing it to cold water. This prevents dizziness and prepares your heart for the temperature change. At Emerald Spa, we have the advantage of a private garden and terraces to cool off in.
2. Cold Water or Plunge
Next, rinse under a cool shower or immerse yourself briefly in a plunge pool. Start from the feet and hands, moving slowly toward the chest. This gentle approach helps constrict blood vessels and prevents shock to the system. It improves your immune system, and helps burn fat too. At Emerald Spa, we offer not only indoor, but outdoor showers and a pool to cool off in.
3. Rest and Rehydrate
After cooling, wrap yourself in a towel and relax for 10–15 minutes. Sip cool water, fruit juice, or an electrolyte drink to replenish minerals lost through sweat. You’ll feel an energising tingling sensation and mental clarity—the hallmark of proper sauna practice. We include all drinks for free at Emerald Spa.
Done correctly, cooling down is not discomfort—it’s transformation. It resets the nervous system and leaves you both grounded and refreshed.
