Clothing-free Yoga: What to Know Before Trying It

Follow us on Facebook to see when we will run these sessions.

Benefits of Nude Yoga

Why practice yoga naked? There is a sense of freedom practising yoga naked. Many wrongly equate being naked with sex but this couldn’t be further from the truth in a naked yoga class. It’s about being comfortable in your own skin and the amazing confidence that comes with it. It’s about knowing, accepting and loving yourself at your core. Part of yoga is to honour and connect with your body. Practising yoga naked frees you from negative feelings about your body and allows you to be more accepting and deeper connected with yourself and the world around you.

Boosts Body Image and Improves Self-Esteem

Nude yoga will improve your body image and self-esteem. Some people fear being naked in a group, or feel intimidated practising nude yoga, if they have been brought up in a conservative sub-culture where they are told that nudity or bodies are ‘bad’,  Our society is driven by an unrealistic ideal of physical beauty, which can fuel an array of insecurity and self-doubt. Most people don’t have the body of a model and yet, we hold ourselves to those standards. One of the reasons we offer naked yoga classes is to help you gain confidence by accepting and loving your body as it is. It can be a very healing experience to realise you are accepted, and you can grow in flexibility and confidence in what your body can do.

Enhances Mind-Body Connection

Because there is literally nothing between you and your practice, it is easier to focus on what you are doing, thereby enhancing the mind-body connection that many seek through yoga practice.

Improves Your Posture / Flow

Have you ever gotten tangled up in your yoga clothes, or felt the urge to tug down your shirt mid posture, or had your face covered by your yoga top? Nude yoga eliminates this interference, so all you have to do is focus on your posture as you flow through poses without interruption.

Enhances Sexual Awareness

Nude yoga isn’t a sex thing, but it does make you more aware of your sexuality. It can be a good thing in the modern world where just feeling like a sexual being can get overlooked.

Psychological Benefits

By having more confidence in your nude body, you logically have more confidence when you’re wearing clothes. Feeling more confident is something that many people work toward.

Helps insomnia

Yoga helps to balance the body’s melatonin levels, the chemical which regulates your body clock. Physical exertion and mental concentration of yoga helps to relax your body and reduce stress. Follow the session with a few healthy sauna sessions to fully relax and destress and ensure a perfect night’s sleep.

Promotes weight loss

Many people find their weight finds a healthier level through our classes. For some people this means they lose weight, for others they gain weight. Remember that weight is not a good way to judge health and fitness.

Strengthens muscles

Our classes help strengthen muscles through holding poses, lifting your limbs and body, without using additional weights. This is important for all ages, but especially as we get older.

Increases your stability

Without strength and stability, we can fall, leading to injury and lack of confidence in certain situations. This can affect us at any age, but it is more serious as we get older. Practising yoga, in general, will improve your balance, stability, and confidence, as it helps to develop stabilising muscles.

Increases flexibility

Staying flexible is very important – especially if you have a seated job. Flexibility will help ensure as we get older, we can function well, and easily perform everyday tasks with injury. Our Yoga sessions will ensure each main muscle group in your body is stretched.
Don’t worry if you are not that flexible at first – it will increase, the more you practise yoga..

We encourage you to develop a flexible mind more than anything. You don’t need to be physically flexible to join our nude yoga. All you need is to focus on letting go, sweating, breathing, moving, and respecting your limitations.

Builds friendships

Once you learn to accept yourself and see that you are accepted and appreciated by others in the class, you will find natural, healthy friendships can be built with others, both in class and outside.

Questions you may have

What style of yoga do you teach?

We teach a fusion of various types of yoga including Vinyasa and Ashtanga, and yoga based on creativity and anatomical fluency. The classes are great for beginners and experienced alike.and provide  an engaging physical workout and inspiration coaching for the perfect mind body connection. The idea is to stretch, get to know and improve your body, posture and health.

Can I join a nude yoga class without being naked at first?

No. All participants must be naked in order to keep everyone on the same level and equal. That’s what naked yoga is all about. All members start the session clothed (or wrapped in a towel) and then all remove clothes at the same time, so everyone feels safe. At the end of the session, you may take a shower or get dressed again. If you wish to sauna after yoga (recommended) then just take a shower and go to the sauna with a towel to sit on.

What if I get an erection?

It rarely happens, but if it does it’s okay, normal, and nothing to be embarrassed about. It will pass quickly. Erections happen for a lot of reasons and are not limited to sexual attraction. Yoga moves a lot of energy throughout the body and sometimes erections happen. But once we start moving, there is no way an erection could be sustained, because of the physical nature of Yoga.

Are we allowed to touch each other?

Sometimes, though rarely,  teachers will incorporate partner work into their classes that involves contact between members. This might be back to back or using hands to help your partner stretch or balance. This is not sexual contact, and will only be with a person of your choice. As in any yoga class, the teacher might need to touch you at times, only if needed, to correct alignment and to help avoid possible injury if the posture is performed incorrectly. The teacher’s touch will not be sexual in any way.

Why is it important to stay until the end of the class?

Our classes are systematically planned to leave you feeling rested and energised. Leaving in the middle of a class before completing the full sequence could make you more susceptible to injuries from not cooling down properly, and is disruptive and disrespectful to the rest of the class.

How to prepare for a nude yoga class

Reserve your place

Contact us to reserve your place at our weekly nude yoga classes, as space is limited. Payment in advance will also secure your place for any future classes. A 20% discount is given when reserving 10 classes.

Arrive early

In order to protect members’ privacy and comfort, we lock the door at the beginning of class. Your reservation is guaranteed only up to 5 minutes before the start of class. If you arrive late and get locked out, we may count this as a ‘no-show’ and apply the fee to your membership. To avoid disappointment, please plan to arrive 10 minutes early each time you attend class.
Walking into class after it has started is extremely distracting and disrespectful to other students and the teachers.

Shower before

You may shower at home, or use our showers before – But do not be late for the class.

Bring a towel and yoga mat.

For hygiene we ask you to bring your own mat and towel, but we also have lots of mats and towels, if you don’t have your own, or you forget.

Open Your Mind

Nearly all forms of yoga demand an open mind and an open heart to take the practice seriously, and nude yoga is no different. Leave your ego and your inhibitions at the door and step into a completely new and liberating way to practise.

Do not eat heavy meals right before class

Some people may feel nauseous if they have eaten a meal 2 hours before yoga. Other people can eat half an hour before practising and feel fine. If your stomach has food in it during class, the movement and postures might cause the food to push up against your cardiac valve at the top of the stomach. In the long term, this might damage your cardiac valve.

Drink water before and after class

Drinking water is the single most important thing you can do for your health. Our bodies are 80% water and most of us are dehydrated already. Every cell of our body contains and relies on water to function properly. Working out, it is important to be fully hydrated before class and rehydrate after class. Don’t drink too much though just before the class, as you might feel uncomfortable or need to use the toilet during a class.

Our yoga classes are led by a female yoga teacher.

Everyone is welcome – whatever your age, gender, level of fitness, or experience of yoga. All classes are mixed gender, but if you require a single gender class we could add that if we have 10 people.
